Florida Keys/Islamorada Bonefish carry a reputation amongst international anglers,  and are known to be some of the largest ever recorded. Islamorada Bonefish Guide, Captain Dan loves chasing these elusive and powerful bonefish of the Florida Keys Flats.

Referred to as the “grey ghost” of the flats, bonefish display a chameleon like ability to blend in to the varying habitats they frequent.  

Equipped with a large forked tail and cylindrical shaped body allow for long high speed bursts,  crucial for outrunning the relentless barracudas and sharks.

Bonefish have an emerald green back slashed with jet black stripes and the brightest chrome scales you’ve ever seen. Along with bright pink rubber-like lips, are the distinct markings and colors of the Bonefish.   Appearing to the angler in an array of colors depending on sun angles, colors of the bottom and water clarity. Each bonefish sighting is unique and special.

Our Florida Keys Bonefish took a major hit during the cold snap of 2011 but have bounced back in good numbers throughout the island chain.    With numbers of smaller schools and more sizeable single cruisers being sighted in and caught regularly here in Islamorada.

HOW TO FLY FISH FOR BONEFISH IN THE FLORIDA KEYS

Bonefish are protected and ultra sensitive. We practice careful catch and release handling techniques for all Florida Keys bonefish. Pro Tip: Always handle bonefish with a bare wet hand with a maximum of less than 10 seconds out of the water for a quick photo.  Maintaining a healthy release is our number 1 focus when catch and release sport fishing for bones.
