Snook Fishing in Florida: Islamorada, Biscayne Bay, Everglades National Park and the Florida Keys.

Snook Anglers fishing around the Florida Keys find these ambush predators ruling the mangrove edges, grass flats and ditches of Everglades National Park.  Snook are opportunistic, they are a stealthy game fish with an aggressive demeanor. Snook utilize their large rounded paddle tail to accelerate from a dead stop to a high rate of speed. Snook are also known for their powerful maneuvering, often in tight quarters.  Snook have a distinctive black lateral line which acts as radar, detecting both predator and prey in low light or murky water.

Snook frequent mangrove root edges, overhanging structure, logs and stumps.

Predominantly on a strong outgoing tide, Snook will stage up like a trout in the current. Snook often ambush crabs, shrimp, and a wide variety of bait fish flushed by the sweeping currents.

Prey is typically inhaled by Snook much like a Tarpon by “gill flaring” and sucking water past their gill plates.

Sight Fishing for Snook in the clear waters of Florida Bay, shallow grass flats in Flamingo, and the glades can be an unforgettable experience!  Snook laid up in the grass or sand have an uncanny ability to blend right in to their surroundings. Snook often creep under the mangroves like a floating log or cruise the flats, menacing local bait fish populations.

Finding Snook in any of these situations will offer an opportunity to present the fly. Snook, very similar to the Redfish will need to be enticed by your fly and the movements you apply. Capt Dan will walk you through these recipes before hand as well as in the moment.  Visually witnessing Snook pouncing on your fly in less than 2 feet of water will permanently be etched into your memories. Once hooked and the fight unfolds, you’ll be tested by a Snook’s pre-calculated tactics. Snook will often run under the mangroves, over the log and around the boat engine - these are some common moves!  Any of these encounters with a Snook will continually replay in your mind after you either caught a Snook or hope to the next time!  It’s easy to see that Snook are one of our all time favorites here in south Florida.

Thankfully the Florida Bay Snook population has bounced back tremendously after our big freeze in 2011.
